Teaching & Learning
We believe in a broad and balanced curriculum that supports progression routes as young people move on from school into further study, employment or vocational training. We aim to prepare pupils and students for lifelong learning, able to take up the opportunities that present themselves. We deliver the National Curriculum and ensure the curriculum is differentiated, relevant and supports individuals. Our Heads of Faculty can be contacted if you would like specific subject information.
Underpinning our curriculum, we aim to teach core skills for lifelong learning such as Citizenship, Literacy, Numeracy and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). We have a strong pastoral curriculum that develops the skills of problem solving, team work and self organised study.
Teaching Groups
At Key Stage Three pupils are taught in mixed ability or ability based groups, dependent upon the subject. The amount of time pupils are taught as a tutor group decreases as pupil progress through the Key Stage. An individual's progress is monitored during the course of the year and movement between groups may take place. At Key Stage Four pupils are grouped according to ability and the curriculum choices they make.
In the Sixth Form Students are grouped by their course choices. Post 16 classes are smaller than in the main school, reflecting the needs of study at this level. Details of the Sixth Form Curriculum are available in the Additional Information.
Assessment and Reporting
A critical element of our curriculum is setting pupil achievement targets for achievement over a Key Stage. These targets are challenging and aspirational, we want the pupils and students to be aware of their potential and aim for excellence. These are shared with the pupils and students. They are reviewed as the Key Stage develops so that pupils, students, and parents can monitor progress. We encourage the pupils and students to self assess so that they can identify ways in which they can become more successful. Parents receive annually summary and full reports in Key Stage Three and Four. Progress Reviews and Reports are used in the Sixth Form. If there is a particular need, reports will be drawn up for the benefit of an individual pupil during the year. We also hold both subject and tutor Parents Evenings to share information about progress.
